Science, religion and technology films

October 23rd, 2008 at 22:13

I’m looking for some film titles to list as recommended viewing for students of science, technology and religion. I’ve got a selection already but I’m always interested in seeing what other people have found useful.

Add you suggestions as a comment.

  1. Ken Smith Says:

Metropolis would have to be at the top of my list, I think. Blade Runner would be on it somewhere. So would The Name of the Rose, the only one of Eco’s novels that’s worth reading, and a great movie. It’s not precisely about technology, but it certainly reflects medieval technological developments, and the clash of secular and religious cultures quite well. Oddly enough, even in academic contexts, The Terminator and its various sequels comes up more than I would have thought. Most of it’s a bit silly, but the whole idea of Skynet and what-not has been treated fairly seriously as at least one of the options for a post-singularity future.

I presume you’ll post your list eventually and not just tease us?

    I like the idea of Eco book/film – I hadn’t considered that.

I’ll try and post a list at some point. Certainly “Contact” and “Inherit the Wind” would feature on it, and probably “Gattaca” too.
