Why good television shows get cancelled

April 19th, 2009 at 23:37

Interesting post on why some TV shows get cancelled. Written predominantly about US shows, I think the point about allowing new viewer to jump in to a show at a later point is a good one. Shows with story arcs that build on each episode allow character and plot development, but do hinder picking up a show later on.

Thanks for the mention — and BTW, just curious, what range of programming do you get in N.Z.? With the cable service we get on the US east coast, we get mostly US programming with a little British thrown in (Hustle and Dr. Who are two of few of the rare ones that I remember making it to US outlets). You have to work pretty hard to find something other than that.

A real mix here in NZ on free-to-air TV – NZ, Australian, US and UK programmes. The satellite TV coverage (way more common that cable) has a similar mix too. Means we often get a bit of everything, though sometimes stuff gets missed out or help up for years before it hits the screen (e.g. Torchwood).
